Harrison Spinks: The Luxury Bedmakers Redefining Sleep For 180 Years

Updated: 6 days ago

Harrison Spinks

Harrison Spinks combines 180 years of Yorkshire craftsmanship with pioneering sustainable innovation to create Britain’s most naturally luxurious, responsibly made beds.

Few manufacturers can claim a heritage as deep or as proudly homegrown as Harrison Spinks. Founded in 1840, this fifth-generation family business has spent more than 180 years perfecting the art of sleep. What began as a small Yorkshire craft operation has grown into a pioneering, award-winning brand with over 700 skilled craftspeople, farmers and engineers—all working towards one shared mission: to create the world’s most comfortable and responsibly made beds.

Today, Harrison Spinks stands as the world’s most vertically integrated bedmaker, controlling every stage of production from farm to finished mattress. This rare approach is what sets them apart—and why their beds have become synonymous with authentic British craftsmanship.

A Proud Yorkshire Heritage Built on Craft

Every Harrison Spinks bed is handcrafted using time-honoured techniques passed from generation to generation. In the company’s Leeds factory, expert sewers, tufters, side-stitchers and tape-edgers spend hours perfecting each mattress. Side-stitching alone can take up to eight hours, and requires months of training to master.

This commitment to detail ensures that every mattress leaving the factory is a one-off piece of craftsmanship—beautifully tailored, luxuriously comfortable, and built to last. It’s little wonder their work has been showcased on BBC Two’s Inside the Factory, where viewers saw firsthand the level of artistry that goes into each bed.

Homegrown Natural Materials for Healthier Sleep

At the heart of Harrison Spinks’ philosophy is a simple belief: natural materials make for better sleep. To ensure quality and traceability, the company grows many of its own mattress fillings on its 300-acre Yorkshire farm, just a short distance from the factory.

Here, the team cultivates hemp, flax and linen, while rearing flocks of sheep on untreated pastures. These natural fibres are naturally breathable, moisture-wicking and temperature-regulating—qualities synthetic fillings simply can’t match. They are also naturally renewable and fully biodegradable.

Harrison Spinks was also the first bedmaker to partner with British Wool, guaranteeing that all wool used in their mattresses comes from ethically sourced, traceable British farms. This “sheep-to-sleep” transparency is a cornerstone of their commitment to responsible luxury.

The Only UK Bedmaker to Weave Its Own Mattress Fabric

In a move that revives a long Yorkshire mill tradition, Harrison Spinks invested in state-of-the-art looms to weave its own mattress fabric in-house. Their unique FabriSafe™ cover blends natural wool and viscose, offering a luxuriously soft finish without the use of FR chemicals. Thanks to the high wool content, the fabric is naturally fire-retardant—another step towards safer, healthier sleep.

Beyond mattresses, Harrison Spinks also hand-crafts elegant headboards and divans, each upholstered in a choice of over 50 luxurious fabrics. Whether you prefer sleek minimalism or indulgent textures, their designs elevate any bedroom while offering lasting durability.

Pioneering Spring Technology Made in Yorkshire

Harrison Spinks doesn’t just assemble beds—they engineer the technology inside them. The company designs and manufactures all of its own springs, including:

  • Cortec™ Pocket Springs: A revolutionary glue-free spring system, fully recyclable at the end of its life. Removing glue means the springs can move freely for superior comfort and can easily be separated for recycling.

  • MicroHD Springs: The smallest, lightest springs in the world, layered by the thousands to create ultra-responsive comfort without the need for foam. These springs improve airflow, reduce heat retention, and help the mattress contour perfectly to your body.

Their innovations have earned multiple honours, including Queen’s Awards for Enterprise in Innovation (2013, 2018) and a King’s Award for Enterprise in 2023.

Sustainability at the Core

Long before sustainability became a buzzword, Harrison Spinks championed responsible manufacturing. Their entire operation is built around reducing waste, preserving ecosystems and creating products that last.

  • The farm operates with natural, low-impact farming methods and aims for fully organic certification.

  • Hemp fields actively support local biodiversity, providing vital habitat for pollinators.

  • Any plant fibres not used in mattresses are repurposed into biofuel, animal bedding or eco-friendly construction materials.

  • All wood used in headboards and divans is FSC® certified, ensuring it comes from responsibly managed forests.

Their mattresses are foam-free, glue-free and FR-chemical free, reducing environmental impact while improving sleep quality.
